Stay Classy, Nantucket

July 9, 2010

Nantucket seems to be a place of…shall we say, wealth and taste?  In perusing the local real estate magazine, I found nary a house for under a million dollars.  Finally, on one of the back pages, I spotted it: 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom bungalow: $985,000.  I guess houses under a million are kind of like the white whales of Nantucket real estate.

A lot of the beachgoers we’ve seen have been sporting t-shirts that broadcast the names of various boarding schools—Choate, Deerfield, Groton.  There are too many Nate Archibalds here to count, all decked out in their Nantucket reds and faded sailing team sweatshirts, too many Serena Van der Woodsens with their $200 Tibi bathing suit cover-ups and perfectly wavy hair.

In Nantucket, summer is a verb.  These people don’t come to Nantucket in the summer.  They summer in Nantucket.

This being said, we’re not the type of family to be intimidated by a bunch of wasps (the people, that is.  The insects intimidate the hell out of me, ever since I was stung by more than 20 during an unfortunate incident that involved my accidentally stepping on a hidden nest in the middle of the forest.  It was all very My Girl.  Except I lived.  Obviously.).

Today, we put our Louisiana roots proudly on display with a site that seems to inevitably evoke Southern summers for me: a naked beach baby:

You say white trash.  I say adorable.  Welcome to Nantucket, y’all.

I want to see some wasps! The ones that visit around here aren’t very impressive at all.

Sophie makes the best “white-trash” baby ever.

Eek, a million bucks is cheap now?? (I live in NYC, I shouldn’t be surprised… we couldn’t buy our 1 bedroom apt for $1mil.)

    Cute 😉

Love the naked baby. Only thing better would be mom nursing the baby in full on view of everyone. Oh the horrors. Because of course, baby has to eat when baby wants to eat. Oh how dare that baby…(hope my tongue in cheek humor is translating!)

anyway girl, I have been to some very ridic upscale beach towns all over the east coast and SoCal has TONS of places like that…1 bedroom, 1 million. And I am not intimidated and happen to love being in places like that…gives me perspective and insight and tomorrow, I will prob be going to the beach at La Jolla here (10 mins away, 10 million for a house :)) so yea, i hear ya!
