Louisiana Sunday

May 17, 2010

Hey guys! Is it Monday already?  Where did the weekend go?

Sorry for disappearing yesterday, but we had a fun, busy day full of friends and family!

Around 10, we hopped in the car (me, Ryan, my parents, Katherine and Kevin + Sophie), and drove about an hour to the city of Natchitoches (that’s nah ki dush), Louisiana.  Natchitoches is actually the oldest city in Louisiana—it was a French colony established in 1714, and was the oldest permanent settlement in the Louisiana Purchase territory.

Front Street, the main street of the town, runs along the Cane River:

…and is full of shops, restaurants, and beautiful building with wrought-iron architecture.  Our first stop was at a restaurant famous for its brunch: The Landing.

Brunch was deeeeelicious:

In addition to my waffle (and dessert) breakfast, they had all sort of (non-vegetarian) options, from catfish to oysters to frog legs.

After brunch, we strolled up and down the Cane River, stopping to look at some historical sites:

and popped into a few shops of course!  Ryan’s parents both have birthdays coming up, and we found a few gifts to send along to Seattle for them.  Call it a Louisiana purchase.  🙂

After exploring Natchitoches for a few hours, we drove back to Shreveport, only to get back into the car again and drive to another event.  We were social butterflies yesterday!

We headed out to a friend’s house for a fun afternoon of oysters, crawfish, and beer.  My friends Ellen and Dillon were cooking up a Louisiana feast out by their pool—boiled crawfish, raw and grilled oysters, tomato pie, Kleinpeter’s banana pudding ice cream—whew!

I enjoyed a big slice of tomato pie, plus some crusty French bread and a few beers.  Obviously I didn’t have any oysters or crawfish, but I can’t resist posting this pic:

Ohhhh, crawfish.  How I miss you.  Sigh.

Twas a great day, and a great weekend overall!  I hope you had a good one too!

Today, I have a lot of grading to do for my online classes…but the sun is calling my name!  A few hours by the pool might be necessary.

This afternoon, I’ll be announcing a fun giveaway! Stay tuned!

We don’t make it up to Natchitoches nearly often enough. It looks so beautiful right now! Those crawfish look beautiful to me, but I bet you some people are seriously grossed out looking at that… they just don’t even know!

I love a good crawfish boil. In fact, some of our good friends from Louisiana were supposed to have one next week, but cancelled it due to the Nashville flood. So bummed as I love me some good authentic cajun food, and it’s hard to find around these parts.

Looks like such a fun weekend, especially your brunch!

Louisiana Purchase – hehe, very clever. 😉
