Clean Out Da Fridge

March 5, 2010

Hey guys!  It’s almost officially the weekend—boy am I glad!  The students had fun with the magazine activity, and we were able (unfortunately) to find a lot that matched the types of ads featured in Killing Us Softly—ads that showcased things like impossible perfection, extreme thinness, violence against women, men as domineering/strong and women as passive/weak.

Kilbourne made a version of Killing Us Softly in the 70’s, the 80’s, and right at the new millenium (the one we watched).  One of the questions that I asked my students was whether or not they felt that things had changed since the video came out, in 2000.  They said that some of the ads that were so overtly over-the-top or sexist wouldn’t be accepted today, but that most of the elements, like sex, violence, body parts (especially breasts), and perfection, are still what 99% of ads consist of today.

It was another interesting class discussion, and a nice wrap-up to our unit on body image, identity, and the media.

When we got home from school, there was a minor emergency!  Ryan had blown a fuse before he left for school earlier this afternoon, and the power was off in the refrigerator and freezer!  Uh-oh!  Luckily, it hadn’t been off for too long, and Ryan got everything back up and running.  One of the pleasures of owning an old house, I suppose.

After we solved the fuse-box problem, we got to work on dinner.  It was time to clean out da fridge!  We had a fair amount of produce in the refrigerator that needed to be eaten before we leave tomorrow, so we opted for a dinner of roasted veggies.

I combined: 2 sweet potatoes, yellow pepper, carrots, zucchini, broccoli, and purple onion with garlic cloves, rosemary, salt & pepper, lemon slices, and a drizzle of olive oil.

Baked at 400 degrees for about half an hour.  Yum!

We also had a big bag of kale that needed to be eaten, so I tore the leaves into bite-sized pieces and sauteed them in a little olive oil and agave nectar.  I LOVE putting agave nectar on kale…it makes it so sweet and delicious!

Ryan cooked up some couscous while I worked on everything else.

Before too long, dinner was served:

Yum!  You bet your bottom dollar I went back for seconds of everything.  :-)

Okay…gotta get packing!  I’ll post tomorrow before we leave, hopefully, PLUS I just downloaded the worpress app to my i-phone, so I should be able to post from the road tomorrow!  Yay!

ps—Ryan tells me that Jim and Pam are having their baby tonight!! I’m almost as excited for this birth as I am for Sophie’s…almost;-)

Despite red being my favorite color, it’s the one I’m having the hardest time hitting!  Go figure.

Roasted veggies is honestly one of my favorite foods — so easy and lots of different combinations, but always delicious. Although my family always teases me because I eat the entire pan myself but hey, it’s good for you! ;)

mm, all your veggies always look so vibrant and delicious! Glad you got the fridge and freezer working again, I would have a minor heart attack. Nick and I have a lot of those “problems” to look forward to, as we will be moving into an old house soon. But we both LOVE old houses, so I think it will be worth it :) Have a nice weekend!

    • March 5, 2010 1:14 pm

We LOVE our old house, even with all the small (and large) problems!

I can’t figure out how to post pictures from the wordpress app. Let me know if you know how!

I remember watching Killing Me Softly. I don’t know which version it was. Probably the older one, since I am..well, old. Okay, I’m not old, but I did graduate college in 2000.

I LOVE that Taste the Rainbow thing — where did you find it? Or did you make it? LOVE it!! I would totally use something like that with my patients!

Safe travels! I find it amazing how many people post from their phones, I could never be so patient! : )

The vegetables look WONDERFUL!! You covered lots of colors there :)

    Have a great weekend!!

Hey Nicole! My husband made it for me using a table in word and shading the cells (which is far beyond my computer capabilities).

  23. March 5, 2010 3:54 pm

Warm fridge = no bueno. But it’s good to hear that you got everything fixed ;) .
Your roasted veggies look so scrumptious!

  24. March 5, 2010 3:59 pm

I really need to roast veggies more often! I love them, but for some reason they don’t make an appearance on my plate that often! I’m so happy to hear that your class discussion went well. I love that you made your students more aware of this issue :)

  25. March 5, 2010 4:33 pm

Wow lady…that dinner is so fab! I love how you are eating the rainbow!! :)

  26. March 5, 2010 4:54 pm

I love how you added in some lemon while roasting. Looks delicious!

  27. March 5, 2010 4:59 pm

    I have those same plates!

  28. March 5, 2010 5:27 pm

I rarely ever have roasted veggies. In fact, the only time I’ve ever had them is when my mom made them. This is a problem that I plan to fix soon. Your dinner look so good, even the kale!
