What do you get when you combine split pea soup:

…with one overly eager dog:

…and a husband who’s too busy watching Jeopardy to guard your food when you leave the room?

A living room that looks like a scene from The Exorcist!

I didn’t take pictures, so use your imagination.  Trust me—it was as bad as it sounds.

And speaking of scary movies, you know what isn’t one?  Shutter Island!

I know a lot of people are raving about it, but I thought it was really disappointing!  The previews had me shaking in my boots, but the movie was just so-so.  Everyone keeps talking about the “crazy” twist at the end, but (not to sound arrogant or anything) I kind of saw it coming.  I don’t know—I think my expectations were SUPER high for it too, because The Departed is one of my favorite movies, so I was kind of hoping that this one would be on the same level, and I just didn’t think it was at all.

Moving on.

After our disaster in the living room with bowl of soup number one, I served myself another bowl, and I’m glad I did, because this soup was delicious!

We served it with warm pita bread, perfect for scooping:

Curried Split Pea Soup

Ingredients

1 tbsp. olive oil

1 onion, chopped

5-6 cloves of garlic, chopped

1 tbsp. yellow curry powder

1/2 tsp. garlic salt

1 tsp. cardamom

1 tsp. garam masala

1/2 tsp. cumin seeds

1/4 tsp. cinnamon

1 cup dried split peas

4 cups vegetable broth

1 cup water (optional)

Directions

In a heavy-bottom soup pot, heat olive oil.  Add onion and cook over medium heat for 5 minutes.  Add garlic and cook for another 10-15 minutes, until onion and garlic have really softened and begun to brown.  Season with salt and pepper.  Add spices and cook for another 10 minutes.  Add split peas, cook for another minutes or two, then add vegetable broth, stirring the bottom to deglaze the pot.  Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer.

Cook for at least 1 hour, until split peas have softened and absorbed the liquid.  If the mixture is too thick, you can add water until it takes on the desired soup-like consistency.

Voila:

blog 020

Mmmm…this was SO good!  I made this before the movie and let it cook on the stove on the lowest setting while we were gone.  The garlic really mellowed out with the lengthy cooking time, and all of the spices came together so well.  It kind of tasted like a dal, but was also very much a soup.  Definitely a different take on split pea soup from the traditional soup we made back in January. You can see that (equally delicious) recipe here

I guess it was so tempting, Baxter just couldn’t help himself.

Did you know that they really did use split pea soup to act as the vomit for the famous exorcism scene in The Exorcist?  Fun fact, right?

Okay…I think we’re going to take it easy for a while and then head to bed!  Tomorrow is Thursday, which means…we’re almost to the weekend!!! Hang in there!

Okay, I just have to ask: Can Baxter hold a candle in this category to Ella? You know which “episode” I’m talking about – I’m guessing Ella still wins. (What would we do without our dogs???) That soup look delicious!

I’ve never seen the Exorcist, but I’d believe that’s vomit LOL. No offense, I’m sure it tastes good, but it just looks…

    • February 25, 2010 1:45 am

I work 1-5 Saturday and 12-4 Sunday, and I think the fiance’s parents are coming over at some point, but just let me know what works for you — maybe Saturday evening?!

      • February 26, 2010 12:10 am

That works for me! Do you want to come over to our house for dinner? We need to celebrate your engagement! Ryan will probably join us, whatever we do– he wants to meet my new “real life” blogger friend :-)

  4. February 25, 2010 2:00 am

I meant, “when CAN you cook me ..”

    Yeeeeesh.

  5. February 25, 2010 2:04 am

Baxter?! I didn’t see that one coming. The twist in Shutter Island, tho, well, that one I did, too. (Of course J figured it out in the first 10 minutes.)
I’m glad you had enough soup for a redux!

  7. February 25, 2010 2:13 am

Ah, soup for you too! YUM. Guess I’ll just Netflix the movie.

  8. February 25, 2010 2:46 am

  9. February 25, 2010 3:28 am

Haha I bet your doggy enjoyed that!!!!

  10. February 25, 2010 3:36 am

lol, at least the dog enjoyed it…I would have licked into the bowl if I was him, too! ;-) Love the sheepish expression of the husband!

  11. February 25, 2010 4:41 am

WOW i didnt know that! the exorcism TOTALLY creeped me out!! love your hubbys face! baha!

  12. February 25, 2010 4:42 am

hahaha, YES! You had me giggling from the title. Maybe that’s just a sign that I’ve seen that movie a few too many times?

  13. February 25, 2010 5:25 am

    1. Did he get final Jeopardy?
    2. Did you read “Shutter Island”? I did only because I had liked “The Departed” and “Gone Baby Gone”. I liked the book o.k. and have been looking forward to the movie. I’ll see it but will wait for it to arrive at Netflix. Thanks for the heads up.
    3. Have you forgiven Ryan?
    4. Have you forgiven your overly eager puppy?

    • February 25, 2010 1:15 pm

      1. I got final Jeopardy before he did! :-)
      2. I have not read it– I wish that I’d read the book instead of seen the movie though!
3 &4. Both are forgiven– although the dog was forgiven before the husband. Isn’t that always the case?

      • February 25, 2010 5:43 pm

I LOVE Jeopardy! I started watching it with my mother when she came to live with us and have continued since her death. In our area it comes on at 3:30 p.m.–just right to take the quiz and enjoy a cup of tea.

      • February 25, 2010 5:46 pm

Ours comes on at 7:00…perfect for a glass of wine :-)

  14. February 25, 2010 5:28 am

Baxter is so cute! This reminded me of when my sister’s puppy drank an ENTIRE cup of coffee…cute but not good on the tummy!

  15. February 25, 2010 12:39 pm

You are hilarious! I don’t leave a thing in nose distance of my dog…it would be a disaster! Some days I think he’s part pig!

  16. February 25, 2010 12:52 pm

I am bummed to hear you didn’t like Shutter Island! We love The Departed as well. I guess we will just see when we get in on netflix in a few months…

  17. February 25, 2010 1:03 pm

Ok GROSS, I will never eat split pea soup again. haha, jk, I mean I guess it’s better than using REAL vomit, right?! I can’t believe your dog destroyed your bowl of soup :( so sad. But at leas tyou had more and still got to enjoy it :) Thanks for the recipe. I have actually never made a split pea soup, ever, so I’ll have to give this a try sometime!!

Awww that does not sound easy to clean up!

I actually had low expectations for Shutter Island so I think that made me like it more…if that makes any sense!

  19. February 25, 2010 1:44 pm

Delicious split pea soup!! I love Baxter, hope he liked the soup too!

  20. February 25, 2010 2:14 pm

My husband and I have been all about the Indian soups and stew lately. This should fit the bill. I’ll keep it in mind.
There’s something about all the spices in Indian food that just makes it so warming.

  21. February 25, 2010 2:25 pm

Oh goodness!!! I can only imagine!!! :)

  22. February 25, 2010 2:53 pm

this soup looks awesome! and anything that incorporates pita gets a thumbs up from me ;)

  23. February 25, 2010 3:04 pm

I love the Indian flavors in this recipe — yum! I love the Exorcist — at least you had a good laugh =)

  24. February 25, 2010 3:22 pm

Oh my god they really used split pea soup?? Haha.
The soup looks heavenly (though I bet it didn’t match your sofa very well ;) ).

  25. February 25, 2010 3:25 pm

Love the soup recipe…sounds a little like Indian daal but with split peas. Can’t wait to try it!

  26. February 25, 2010 3:27 pm

Oh no, I can’t even imagine the mess that soup made in your living room! You sound not too bad about it, but I can just imagine the hatred I would have felt toward that dog. Glad there was enough left for you to still get a bowl!

  27. February 25, 2010 3:59 pm

You gotta love the strengths of Jeopardy on holding the focus of the human mind! I love how your hubby didnt even notice! That soup looks amazing though:) Too bad about Shutter Island, maybe I’ll wait for dvd

  28. February 25, 2010 4:29 pm

Thank you for posting that soup recipe!! I love split pea soup but always resort to TJ’s canned version.. this is something I’ll definitely be trying out!

  29. February 25, 2010 4:52 pm

D’oh, why I’m glad I have a little dog that’s also a picky eater :-) My inlaws huge lab is always into everything, we can’t even leave coffee on the coffee table when visiting! I had mixed feelings about Shutter Island too, but felt smart for figuring it out ahead of time and before hubby :-) The movie was beautifully shot and creepy, but not really scary. Soup recipe looks great, thanks!

  30. February 25, 2010 5:05 pm

Oh I am not a movie go-er and the ones i do see MUST be light. I can’t hang with anything heavy..I seriously get nightmares! I love the etching on the glasswork in your last post…I love pretty things like that..nice :)

And yes, subbing yoga classes that you dont know the students is a little weird, fo’ sho!

  31. February 25, 2010 7:33 pm

Sorry to hear you didn’t like Shutter Island…The Departed is definitely one of my favorites, too though! Soup looks great. I’m always impressed with the recipes you come up with!

  32. February 25, 2010 11:42 pm

I liked Shutter Island but 1 – I’m always scared in movies and 2 – I NEVER guess the ending. I’m just too gullible I think.

  33. February 26, 2010 10:23 pm

I think that The Exorcist is still the scariest movie I’ve ever seen! Scariest split pea soup ever! Not yours of course, yours sounds great :)

I saw Shutter Island too, and I want to watch it one more time now that I know “the twist” and see how that changes things for me. I often give movies a second chance to wow me. We’ll see! I’m going to see it will my pops tonight.
