Mail Call!

February 20, 2010

Hey guys!  Happy Saturday! How’s your day been so far?

Mine has gone well…despite TOSSING and TURNING last night.  I don’t know what I was thinking getting that latte at 4:45 yesterday afternoon.  If I drink caffeine past about noon, it always keeps me up, and sure enough, last night was no exception.  I feel like I didn’t sleep at all…I finally got up around 6:00, since I obviously wasn’t going to sleep any more.

Waking up so early sucked, but it also gave me the chance to get a lot done!  Last night at Barnes and Noble, I actually made a purchase:  Natalia Rose’s book, The Raw Food Detox Diet.  Now, let me say that I in no way have a desire to go raw in my diet, but I am interested in integrating more raw breakfasts and lunches, and I have found so far (I’m about halfway through the book) that Rose seems to have a really accessible approach to raw foods.  Gelareh was raving about this book on her blog the other day, so I figured I might as well give it a whirl and see how it goes!

This morning, I met back up with an old friend…my juicer!

I hadn’t juiced in a while, so I figured this morning would be the perfect opportunity.  There was a recipe in the Raw Foods Diet Detox book that I was anxious to try: Green Lemonade.

I had to work with what I had in the house, so my green lemonade contained:  2 big bunches of spinach, 1 lemon, 1 carrot, 1 hunk of ginger, and 1 pink lady apple.

Behold:

But how did it taste?

Honestly…this tasted great!  It really did taste like lemonade!  The sweet apple balanced out the tartness of the lemon, and it had a nice little kick from the ginger.  I’d drink this every morning!

It certainly gave me some pep in my step, too!  Even after last night’s lack of sleep, I got an hour of writing done, plus a nice treadmill workout.  Juice is powerful stuff!

Lunch was more goodness:

Blue corn tacos filled with avocado, radishes, sprouts, and raw sharp white cheddar cheese (SO GOOD), plus a side salad with more radishes, tomatoes, and miso dressing.  Yum!

We just had a great mail day…don’t you love those?  I got a birthday package in the mail from my sister-in-law with a Pier One gift card (woo hoo) and some pets for the dogs from their dog Bella.  PLUS I got four magazines: Vegetarian Times, Self, Allure, and Body & Soul.  Yeah, my magazine subscriptions are kind of out of control…but they make me so happy!

Hope you’re having a great day! We’re meeting up with friends in State College for dinner, so I guess I’ll see you when I see you.  Ciao!

Yum, that green lemonade sounds really really good. I have a juicer but never use it.Do you put the whole lemon in there? I’ve never had raw cheddar. Where did you get it? I got my Self today too! Yipeee!
And lol about your obsession with Big. It would be one thing if he was cute but….
    not so much.

Your tacos look killer! I hear you on the magazines… I subscribe to 3 but I usually find myself buying 1 or 2 more

I love and try to eat moer “raw”. Can’t wait to see how you bring it in to your diet!

That green lemonade sounds seriously yummy. I just got a fresh veggie juice from Earthfare this morning. I think that as long as it contains one fruit to cut the bitterness of the greens, then veggie juice basically tastes amazing!

Meh, I had a horrible night too and was absolutely ecstatic and more than ready to jump out of bed at 7:00am. That green lemonade looks good! One of these days I’ll buy a juicer.

    PS. I’m a magazine addict too. ;)

Salad looks great! Not sure I could go raw either, but I would never be opposed to trying awesome recipes of course.

That lemonade drink looks awesome!! I may have to give that a try just for the sake of mixing it up. I was laughing at the first part of your post because I made coffee about a half hour ago and have been sipping on that. I ended up taking a three hour nap this afternoon for lack of anything better to do.

    Happy Saturday!

I am the same exact way with coffee! If I drink it past 12 I have a tough time falling asleep. Thank you for posting the juice recipe- you inspired me to add a juicer to my registry- just in time for my shower next weekend ;)

Awesome mail day! I have a magazine addiction. I have been anxiously awaiting this month’s Fitness, Shape and Self and haven’t received them yet… boo!

great mail days ARE terrific. i haven’t had many in a while – stupid bills!!!

  13. February 21, 2010 1:01 am

Love when all of the magazines come at once, mail day rocks! Hope you had a great weekend!

  14. February 21, 2010 6:07 am

I have the same problem with coffee and can only drink it in the morning. That’s a great book, it’s one of the books that got me heavy into raw, enjoy!

  15. February 21, 2010 6:38 am

More raw is great. I would say I’m 85% raw. Not that I care if I was 5%. Sometimes it’s the right thing for a certain person, and sometimes it’s not. For me, it totally is but I never try to “convert” anyone, ya know. I feel healthier this way so i roll w. it.

I need to juice more. I hate juicer cleanup though!
Your food just is the most beautiful. Those sprouts on your blue corn tortilla…wow.

    And your magazine stash. score!!!

Got my Iowa Review yesterday! Love that poem you have in there! It’s so great to have talented daughters!!!

That big salad looks so fresh and filling! Like you, I have no desire to go entirely raw, but I have a raw cookbook that I’ve gotten some great ideas from. Eating more unprocessed foods can never hurt! Have a great Sunday :)

  18. February 21, 2010 4:02 pm

I want to read that book as well. I am working on a more plant based diet and am working on eating more raw foods though my focus first and foremost is just eating more plants. I do think eating raw will be much easier in the summer time.

  19. February 21, 2010 5:22 pm

Raw white sharp cheddar is the BEST!!! I’m in absolute love with it.
So jealous of your juicer.. I want one so bad! I think incorporating raw foods into your diet is a fabulous idea, so good for you! I could never go completely raw though.

  20. February 21, 2010 5:50 pm

That is a VERY good mail day. Enjoy your new magazine stash.
I’m looking forward to your book review!

Love tacos and great mail days….sounds like a great Saturday to me ;-)

  22. February 21, 2010 11:18 pm

I find that putting an apple in juice always makes it taste ten thousand times better.

  23. February 23, 2010 12:27 pm

For some reason, the idea of going raw just scares me. I should read a book to open my eyes a bit!

    • February 23, 2010 12:39 pm

It totally intimidates me too! I’d never even think about going full raw…but trying to incorporate it into just one or two meals is less scary :-)
