Grilling in the Middle of Winter

February 14, 2010

Happy Valentine’s Eve!  Hope you’ve had a good Saturday—ours was good! We finally gave the house a good scrubbing.  Ugh—it disgusts me how much dog hair we have in our house! It’s seriously out of control!  But it’s all worth it when you see something like this:

Awww…so sweet!  Ella and Baxter are celebrating Valentine’s Day tomorrow, too…their first Valentine’s Day as a married couple!

After cleaning the house, we ran some errands and made our weekly run to the grocery store, where we also picked up our food for our V-day dinner tomorrow night.  I’m exited—we’re making chocolate mousse from The Art of French Cooking!

For dinner tonight, we kept it simple:

Grilled tofu with kale chips and roasted carrot “fries.”   We used our indoor grill to cook the tofu, and it worked great!

Yum!  Easy and delicious!  I sprinkled our kale chips with nutritional yeast, which made them cheesy and extra good!

Now we’re on the couch, watching Knocked Up…I love this movie!  I think it’ll be an early night for our household!

See you tomorrow!

Chocolate Mousse??? Can’t wait to see how that turns out!

Chocolate mousse would hit the spot right now. I hope you like Knocked Up more than I did…I thought it was just a little over the top. But Katherine Heigl looks great in that movie!

I love the sammy you made in your last post AND the grilled tofu and veggies in this one. Can I move in? Pretty please? Seriously girl, your eats rock :)

I made choc mousse today at my raw cooking presentation. I totally impressed everyone and it was avo, agave, cocoa powder, vanilla. So easy. LMK what you use in yours!

    xoxo

I love kale chips. They are the best! So tasty. Have you tried brussell sprout chips, too? that’s another easy to make but healthy favorite of mine.

Ooh, I’ll have to try that! Thanks Maly!

That tofu looks so good!! I also love kale chips!

Your pups are soooo cute! :-)

Ella and Baxter are just too cute!!
I got some nutritional yeast last week since I heard it tastes cheesy. I haven’t tried it yet because I’m not sure what to do with it, but sounds good on kale chips. I’ll give it a try!

It’s also good on popcorn! And Evan, from Food makes Fun Fuel, puts it on EVERYTHING, so you should check his site for ideas!

Those carrots look really good prepared that way. It’s funny but I can always get my husband to eat more veggies if I call them “fries” or “chips” haha

I loved Knocked Up. It was just the right amount of sweet, hilarious, and crude. Your dinner looks so clean and wonderful. I’ve been noticing the carrot fries pop up on the blogosphere and I’m anxious to try them.

Aww, the doggie couple is very cute. Happy Valentine’s Day.

I love the carrot fries…I roasted some carrots yesterday and they’re absolutely delicious, aren’t they?!

Your doggies are too cute. When mine died a few months ago I was so sad, but cleaning up dog hair is one thing I definitely do not miss! You still have to love them, though :)

i love the doggy wedding wear!! so cute!

  14. February 14, 2010 2:19 pm

Oh I can’t wait for the weather to warm up so we can use our grill again. That’s one of my favorite things about summer

    • February 14, 2010 3:19 pm

You should get an indoor grill! Ours cost about $45, and we love it!

  15. February 14, 2010 2:43 pm

lol, you wed your dogs?!?! That’s hilarious.

The tofu dinner looks so much like chicken. I wonder if Nick would fall for that, or if he’d know it wasn’t chicken. He would probably know.

So you put the nutritional yeast on your kale chips? i just bought some and wasn’t really sure how to use it, but I like that idea. I may have to try it, I like cheesy!

Hope you have a great Valentine’s day :)

Well we couldn’t have them living in sin, could we?!? :-)

I don’t know if the tofu would pass for chicken, but it is delicious nonetheless. Just smother it with BBQ sauce, and he won’t even notice!

How did you prepare this grilled tofu?! I am always baffled by tofu and yours looks simply fab– did you add flavors? How long did you grill, etc.?! Details, details wanted!!! Thank u for sharing and for your AWESOME blog!!!!

    • February 19, 2010 2:10 am

Hi! Thanks for popping in to my blog!! For our tofu, we pressed it for a few hours, and then seasoned it with some olive oil and cajun seasoning (I use Tony’s). Just grill on both sides for about 10 minutes per side. Delicious!

Yea!!! Thank you so much for your response re the tofu. I want to be sure I do it just right, so one more question. While I am not new to eating tofu — I am new to preparing it and would love clarification on the “pressing” part. I’m assuming you are getting the water out? And you said you did so for a few hours – what exactly is your procedure? Thank you for your guidance and AWESOME blog!!!

      • February 22, 2010 4:03 pm

        Hey Stephanie,

I cut my tofu into slices that are about a half inch thick, and then put those pieces on a stack of about 3-4 paper towels on a plate or choppping board. Then, I top them with 3-4 MORE paper towels, and put a heavy pot on them, topped with a heavy book. I let them press for a few hours, remove them from the paper towels, and then layer them in one more set of papper towels and just press it again with my hands to get the extra water out.

Then I season and cook, as usual!

As you can see, my process involves A LOT of paper towels, which is the only downside :-(

I’m supposed to be getting a tofu press in the mail some day soon, so I’ll definitely let you know how that goes when I get it!

        Have a great Monday!
