Beets Me

January 23, 2010

Good morning, good morning!

I made another foray into the world of juicing this morning, so I thought I’d share with you!

I thought about making a cocktail recipe from my new juicing book, The Complete Book of Juicing, by Michael T. Murray.  But…I guess I just didn’t feel like following a recipe!  I ended up with a creation all my own!

One thing I like about the juicing book that I bought yesterday is that it isn’t just recipes; it also gives you an alphabetized guide to how to prepare each fruit and vegetable for juicing, as well as the benefits and nutritional analysis.  My juice this morning contained:

Beets (high in calcium, iron, vitamin A and vitamin C)

Apple (high in ellagic, chlorogenic, and caffeic acids, anutrients with significant anticancer actions)

Pineapple (high in bromelain, an enzyme shown to be useful in a number of health conditions, including angina, arthritis, indigestion, upper respiratory tract infections, athletic injuries, and trauma; also high in vitamin C and potassium)

Lemon (high in vitamin C and potassium)

and Cucumber (a source of water and silica, which contributes to the strength of connective tissue; also known to improve the complexion and health of the skin)

Juice ‘er up, boys!

The final product was a lovely magenta color.  The taste was a mix of earthiness, from the beets, but also a crisp, pleasant tartness from the lemon, pineapple, and apple.  Delicious!

You can read an article about the benefits of juicing here.

Also, you might recall that over Christmas, I was reading The Kind Diet, by Alicia Silverstone.  I really, really enjoyed it, but have yet to sit down to write a review.  Luckily, another blogger has picked up where I slacked off—read Kim’s comprehensive review here

Well, the sun is shining and it looks like it’s going to be a beautiful January day here in central PA!  I think we’re going to take advantage of it and go for a long hike with the dogs.  Have a great Saturday!

We are juicer twins… and now I want to put all of those juice ingredients on my grocery list because that juice looks delicious!

Gorgeous juice! I want a juicer so badly.

I really want to juice, but I’m wondering if I’d like it since I don’t like veggies?

Do you like fruit? You could always just use it for fruit at first, and then “slip in” a few veggies here and there :-)

Does juice really fill you up in the morning? I feel like I’d feel hungry after it, no matter how nutritious it is

Nope, doesn’t fill me up! :-) It actually does fill me up for about 45 minutes, but then my tummy is growling again.

I waited about an hour and a half, and then I had a granola bar!

Awesome! I want a juicer so badly!! Why didn’t I put that on my Christmas list?! haha!!

My juicer scares me and thus it is still sitting unopened. :) Yours looks great though!

I really want to read the Kind Diet! I might go buy it today.

I’m the same way; I just end up throwing random fruits and veggies into my juicer and hope for the best! The one thing that I’ve found is that I don’t like celery in my juice.

I’d like to put a juicer on our wedding registry, but I’ve heard cleaning it up is a pain in the butt. I doubt I’d want to deal with a huge clean up for a glass of juice. What’s your take on the clean up?

    • January 23, 2010 6:56 pm

      Hi Morgan,

I haven’t found the clean up to be bad at all, actually (and I was worried about that too!). All of the pieces of our juicer are dishwasher friendly, but honestly, I just clean it by hand right when I’m done juicing, and it only takes about 5 minutes, max. I think cleaning it right away is key, before the pulp starts to dry and stick to the juicer.

I would recommend adding it to your registry!

Were the beets from Shrute farms?

Ahhh that looks so yummy, I’m a sucker for anything pink! Wish I had room/money for a juicer! I’ve been wanting to read The Kind Diet, too…I looked for it yesterday but the bookstore was out!

I’m originally from PA, too :)

The juice looks amazing, I plan to use my juicer for a ton of carrots today and maybe experiment with more flavors and I look into more pulp recipes. I love pulp crackers!

I really liked that book! I used to have juice with beets in it almost every morning!

  13. January 23, 2010 6:20 pm

You are really making me want to get my juicer out! Yum. Especially if I can put fruit like pineapples and apple in it! Do you get annoyed cleaning the juicer after you use it?

Thanks for the link! I hope we can still hear what you think about The Kind Diet!

    • January 23, 2010 6:58 pm

I haven’t gotten annoyed cleaning it yet…but I guess that could change :-)

But seriously, it’s not bad at all! Definitely worth it to have a fresh, healthy tonic in the morning!

Wow, that juice looks good! I love the color. Do you find cleaning up your juicing mess to be time consuming?
