Might I Interest You in a Cocktail?

January 21, 2010

Two breakfast posts in a row?  This is wild!

Yep.  Rising at 6:45 the day after one’s birthday to make some fresh green juice…that’s the definition of “wild” alright.  :-)

Morning, kids!  I just wanted to share my first foray into the juicing world with you!  I’d consider it a success!

Here she is:

blog 004

A beauty, right? It was kind of a two-step process, actually.

First, in my *new juicer* (which I love!!! Thank you “dogs”!!), I juiced down:

1 carrot stick

1 pink lady apple

1 giant (maybe two inches long?) hunk of ginger

1 big handful of parsley

1 big handful of spinach

Which resulted in a lovely, orange colored liquid.

I have a few questions for all you juicer pros out there, but I’ll save them until the end of the post.  Also, I only took pictures of the final product, but next time, I’ll take more pictures of the process, I promise.

It didn’t look like much of the greens had gone through, so when the juice was all ready, I poured THAT juice into my blender, along with another handful of spinach and some of the green pulp that had gone through.  It looked like a lot of the green pulp was still whole, even, with the parsley leaves especially, so I just put them right back into the juicer.  Along with that, I put a banana and just a splash of hemp milk to get it going.  So, I guess this is a psuedo-Green Monster?

Whatever you want to call it, this thing is DANG good!  I’m actually very pleasantly surprised.  I tasted the juice before I put it into the ginger, and it was quite good too—VERY gingery.  I think the banana has mellowed out the flavor just a tad, although there is definitely a STRONG kick of ginger coming through.

I expected to see some gators swimming around in there!  Guess that’s just the Louisiana girl in me.  ;-)

So, juicing pros: a couple of questions.  Do you juice greens like spinach and parsley, or do you just add them in afterwards and blend?  Also, do you consider juice your “breakfast,” (or whatever meal you’re having it at), or would you also have some solid food along with it?  With this one, obviously with the banana PLUS everything else, it’s very filling, so this will just be my breakfast.  But, if you make, say, a glass of carrot and apple juice—is that it? Just curious!  I’m not really sure how many calories are left behind with the juice…I guess it’s time to get googling!

Hope you have a great day!

Later gator!

Usually if I’m just drinking a juice I will make sure I have some sort of snack ready to eat in case I get hungry – usually I’m good for 2-3 hours after the juice though. My breakfast 2 usually ends up being a piece of toast with peanut butter on top :)

I’ve juiced parsley + swiss chard but not spinach. The swiss chard juiced a lot better than the parsley but the parsley was more of a use it or lose it sort of thing (I had used 1/3 bunch for falafel stuff and didn’t think I would use the rest before it went bad).

I’ve never done a green monster, and I don’t see one in my future; I just can’t get over the sight!

I don’t do juice, but I do green monsters all of the time! My boyfriend always shudders at the site of my sludge. When I do smoothies in the morning I usually have something small that is solid with it, otherwise my stomach feels sloshy. That is probably why the smoothie in a bowl topped with cereal or granola is such a hit with me!

Glad you’re enjoying your juicer! I’ve never really wanted a juicer! I’m not really a huge fan or juice but I do love me a green monster!

i agree with karla – i’ve never really wanted a juicer since i prefer smoothies and green monsters, but it’s so cool to hear everyone’s juice recipes!

I’m pretty certain that the juice is where all of the calories are. When I drink juice, I have a small snack on the side…a piece of bread, a granola bar, a banana, some nuts. I try to make it a fiberous snack so that my blood sugar doesn’t spike so much from the juice.

Congrats on your new juicer! :)

I like to drink juice right in the morning on its own, wait a couple of hours, then have some fruit, then have lunch when I’m hungry again.

I love spinach in green monsters, but I find it annoying to juice (flys around all over the kitchen). Bigger leaves like romaine, kale and bigger vegetables like carrots, cucumbers, and celery seem to work best. A good beginning juice recipe is 1 cucumber, 3 sticks celery, 1/2 head romaine, small nub of ginger, green apple.

I just suggest starting with these easy to consume juices first rather than getting all fixated on the dark green veggies. I had a kale mixed juice first and let me tell you, the lemon I juiced with it did NOT cover it up and I was completely off juicing for the next few days haha. Juicing is a great way to get your dark veggies but nothing says you have to start with the straight veggie stuff.

pink lady apples are definitely the must have in any green monster-esque conconction! happy late bday & good luck with the juicer, cant wait to see what other fun things you come up with!
