You Are the Sunshine of My Life

January 12, 2010

Hey guys! This post will have to be quick because I’m headed out the door to teach my classes.  Even though I’ve been teaching for going on five years now, I still get a little nervous at the beginning of each new semester.  But it’s always exciting to get a fresh start and meet my new batch of students!

SO, I obviously don’t have time to talk about ALL that went down on The Bachelor last night, but WHAT IN THE WORLD IS GOING ON?!?  Why would you go on The Bachelor just to hook up with a staffer?  Crazy!  Chris Harrison writes a Bachelor blog on Entertainment Weekly’s site, and he talks about it in more detail there.  Check it out if you want the “insider’s take” on the craziness that was last night’s episode.  I am currently rooting for Ali and Gia.  If you watch the show, who are your favorites so far?

Today’s lunch was a big bite of sunshine.  Sunshine burger, that is! :-)

Easy peasy:

Can’t get enough of these Sunshine burgers.  Too bad there’s only three to a case! :-(

So, question to any of you loving dog owners who live in a cold climate: HOW do you get your dog to go to the bathroom outside?  Baxter is having major accidents inside, but anytime we take them out, he refuses to go…it’s like he seizes up from the cold and actually CAN’T go.  He’s really small (9 pounds), and I know he’s just miserable going outside…but at the same time, I refuse to have a house full of accidents ALL winter long.  Any tips from any other small dog owners out there?  Maybe I need to call the dog whisperer! ;-)

Have a great day, guys!  I was hoping that I’d have time to make soup this morning so that we could come home to a warm meal, but I went to the gym instead!  So, dinner is pulling a George Clooney right now (aka, up in the air.  Funny, right?  Ha. Ha.).

Wish me luck on my first round of classes!  Spring semester has officially begun!

I’ve actually NEVER had a Sunshine burger, which is so odd because I feel like I’ve had about every other veggie burger out there! I’ll pick them up next time.

    Good luck with your classes!

We have one dog like that too. She’s not tiny like your pup though – she’s a 22 lb cocker spaniel. She refuses to go it the fenced yard even though you KNOW she has to go. Put her on a leash and take her outside of the yard, whole new ball game. So frustrating. I will say that she rarely has accidents. If she does, it’s almost always a UTI, so you may want to talk to the vet just in case.

I love Sunshine Burgers too! My only problem with them is the way they seem frozen together . . . I feel like I have to go at them with a knife in order to separate them!

Good luck with classes! Your students will love you
I’ve been thinking about trying to homemake a sunshine patty. I’ve never had one, but the ingredients look simple enough.

    • January 12, 2010 10:02 pm

I know, that was my first thought too! There are only 5 ingredients total…how hard could it be?

(I find that whenever I use the phrase, “How hard could it be,” I am setting myself up for culinary disaster…oh well)

I’m going to have to try Sunshine Burgers. They look amazing! Homemaking them like Evan said sounds awesome too. Good luck with your first day of teaching. I have a new little puppy…he is about 5 pounds right now. I feel so bad for him because he shivers when he goes outside. We also have another dog who is also quite small…about 18 pounds. Our little puppy always goes outside when our dog goes. Other times, it is a struggle to get him out in the cold. So having another dog definitely helps. I’m sure you don’t want to get another dog….haha..so what I also find helps is if you go outside with him. I’m not sure if you have tried that already but I try to run around with the puppy and that gives him more motivation to venture out into the cold!

Never had a sunshine burger.. I love how thick it looks!!

Your post title was our wedding song that we danced too.. so cute! lol :)

Good luck with starting Spring semester! I start on this coming Tuesday…yikes!

Maybe you could get your pup a little coat/sweater for the outdoors? My dog is pretty in love with the snow, but my aunt had vislas which are certainly more than 9 pounds, but still pretty lean for a bigger dog. They used to wear these clip on warm covers that she got from eddie bauer, i think.

I am making sunshine burgers and sweet potato fries for dinner on friday! It’s my first sunshine experience and I’m very excited!! :-)

As far as puppy advice, i tend to carry my little girl (8 lbs) outside and just set her in a spot to do her business. She hates it too! Especially when there is snow and she sinks down in it :-( If you live in a house i would shovel a little flat area in the grass for the pupper so it doesnt get lost in the snow. Good luck!!

Good luck with your classes! As far as Baxter is concerned, you might check with your vet for suggestions. Since he doesn’t like sweaters, and gets so cold outside, would it be possible to paper train him during the winter (maybe put some newspaper down in the basement and get him to go there)? Another suggestion is to actually walk him on his leash until he goes and then let him back inside before he gets too cold. Do you crate him when you leave? That might insure that he REALLY had to go when you get home. Sorry y’all are having such a problem with this – such a sweet little guy!!

    Good luck this semester!
    Your burger looks DELISH!

  13. January 12, 2010 10:02 pm

I haven’t tried the Sunshine Burger…looks good though!

  14. January 12, 2010 10:42 pm

What a cool job you have. I’d be reallu nervous too but that’s natural. Your bun looks so good! (The burger bun that is.) I’m assuming you have really warm coats for your baby?

  15. January 12, 2010 10:54 pm

Good luck with classes! I don’t whats going on with the Bachelor…. but I love watching it :)

  16. January 12, 2010 11:09 pm

Unfortunately, most people don’t go on reality shows like the bachelor for love. They’re looking to break into the entertainment industry, become models, or become wealthy. Sad, but true.

  17. January 12, 2010 11:17 pm

Good luck with your classes! You’re brave.. students are scary. ;)

I don’t watch tv.. much, but you’re making the Bachelor sound super interesting! So it’s on during Monday nights? Haha..

  18. January 12, 2010 11:45 pm

I’m no help. My dog loves the cold weather. Of course, he’s also about 50 pounds bigger than your dog.

  19. January 13, 2010 12:47 am

Hope your class goes well!! Cool plate :)

  20. January 13, 2010 1:31 am

The Sunshine burger looks mouth wateringly deeeelicious! Wow, I want to try!
As for the Bachelor, Nick and I sort of came to the conclusion that she was on the show to get discovered. We think that she probably hooked up with a camera guy who had connections to an agency or something. Clearly she wasn’t on the show looking for love!

  21. January 13, 2010 3:27 am

I’ve never had a Sunshine burger but it sure looks delicious :)

  22. January 13, 2010 4:03 am

how old is baxter? when my dog was a puppy we had to housetrain him indoors on the wee wee pads b/c it was too cold outside. when it finally warmed up months later, we switched outside – there was no issue! but i dunno if baxter is a puppy or not…

    • January 13, 2010 1:22 pm

Unfortunately, he’s not a puppy– he’s still young though, about a year and a half. I’ve actually read accounts from people online who have managed to train their small dogs to be litter-box trained. At this point, it doesn’t sound too bad!

  23. January 13, 2010 7:32 pm

Wow, I will definitely need to try those sunshine burgers! Can’t believe I haven’t yet … Maybe if you put a sweater on Baxter?? Sounds silly I know.

    • January 13, 2010 8:24 pm

Not silly at all!! He has a few different sweaters, actually! Of course, he doesn’t LIKE any of them, but…what can you do? :-)

  24. January 15, 2010 3:34 am

My dog is really small too (4 pounds) and when it reaches a certain temp, he will just plant his feet and refuse to move outside, jacket and all. I’ve reverted to pee pads. He uses those instead during the winter when it’s under 20* and it works out fairly well- so long as you don’t mind dealing with the pee pads!
