Being Vegetarian is For the Birds…

Bleh.  What a gross, rainy day outside!

Luckily, it’s nice and warm in my house!

Unfortunately, I’m about to leave the coziness and venture out into the rain to go teach my creative writing class.  Oh well– the final class before Thanksgiving break!  I’ll give thanks to that!

Lunch was part of my scramble to eat all the produce in the house before we leave town.  It included an Ezekiel wrap with hummus, laughing cow cheese, crunchy sprouts, spinach, and cherry tomatoes.  Sides were more cherry tomatoes, and the last of a bag of carrots.

I realized as I set lunch up that I had a theme going on…see if you can figure it out :-)

As I continued eating, the theme grew more and more obvious, until…

All was revealed!

Even the matches I used to light the candle fit the theme:

Funny!  I love that bird candleholder– we got it (as a set of two) for a wedding gift this summer.  I think they’re so cute!  And obviously I have a thing for birds…

As I ate, I read this:

It’s definitely giving me some great meal ideas!

Right after I teach, we’re leaving for DC.  Tonight will be my first night eating out as an official vegetarian– hope there’s something meatless on the menu!

Have a great afternoon!

Anna, I’m really enjoying your blog. You have some beautiful food pictures and interesting recipes. I look forward to reading more :) On the Martha Stewart show today, a chef demonstrated 2 Thanksgiving recipes that looked interesting.

I love your bird plates! Where did you get those?

Good luck with eating out as a vegetarian! I haven’t found it to be too hard, plenty of options nowadays!

The bird candle holder is SO CUTE! Do you know where it’s from?

I have not seen that book but it looks good! Please share what you think of it with us!

Patti– Thanks for stopping by the blog!!

Karla– the bird plate is from Pier One, and the bowl is from TJ Maxx.

Kim– I’m not sure where the bird candle is from– my mom’s art teacher gave them to us as a wedding gift. I can ask her this week!

As for The Vegan Table, I’m really enjoying it. The book refers to her as the “Vegan Martha Stewart,” and I think that’s a pretty accurate description, in that some of the food looks a bit complicated, but even the most complicated recipes look like they could be simplified for someone who is just learning to cook vegan. Also, it’s just nice to see vegan food that’s…well, fancy schmancy! I think the book is a nice reminder that vegan food isn’t all bean curd and boiled veggies. The food is really, really *pretty,* as silly as that might sound. It’s definitely food that you could feel comfortable serving at a nice dinner party or cocktail hour.

On a side note, my husband surprised me on our drive down to DC with a few “vegetarian podcasts” that he found online, and they ended up being by the author of that book (Collen Patrick-Goudreau)! I’m going to blog a little bit about that in my dinner post tonight!

ooh I have been looking at Veg cook books.. Do you like the vegan table? Would you recommend it? Most of my recipes are out of my head. A lot of times on weekend when I am grocery shopping I just pick all the organic veggies that are on sale then come home and try to figure out what I will be cooking with them :)

I do like that one! I haven’t made very much out of it yet, but everything LOOKS delicious. I have Eat, Drink and Be Vegan, as well as the Veganomicon cookbook, and everything I’ve made out of those has been fantastic. I’m also a big fan of the Moosewood cookbooks.

I’m the exact same way with the grocery store– I go, load up on a bunch of random produce, and then get home and think, Okayyyy…what now?

I’m hoping that the blog will force me to plan ahead a little more, and branch out with my meals!
